"The Exact Opposite of Okay" ist ein Young Adult Roman, der sich mit dem Thema "Slut Shaming" auseinander setzt. Hauptperson des Buches ist die 18-jährige Izzy, die Vollwaise ist und mit ihrer Oma zusammen in eher prekären Verhältnissen lebt: die Familie hat nicht viel Geld und die gesundheitlich angeschlagene Oma hält die ganze Familie mit einem schlecht bezahlten Job über Wasser. Izzy ist nicht besonders gut in der Schule, liebt aber das Schreiben von Drehbüchern und das Filmen von Comedy-Sketches, sie träumt von einer Karriere als Comedy Star oder Drehbuchautorin, hat aber nicht mal das Geld um sich ein College-Studium oder eine Ausbildung leisten zu können. Sie versteckt ihre Gefühle und Schwächen hinter ironischen und sarkastischen Bemerkungen und verbringt ihre Freizeit am Liebsten mit ihren Freunden, der indischstämmigen Ajita und ihren langjährigem Sandkastenfreund Danny. Als Izzy auf einer Party mit 2 Jungs schläft und dann auch noch Nacktfotos mit einem der beiden austauscht, gerät sie in einen Strudel der Ereignisse, der ihr ganzes Leben aus der Bahn wirft.Das Buch ist in Tagebuch-Form geschrieben und beginnt kurz vor dem großen "Sex-Skandal". Der Schreibstil ist sehr unterhaltsam, auch wenn Izzys Dauersarkasmus vor allem anfangs etwas anstrengend sein kann. Ich lese aber generell gerne Bücher in Tagebuchform, deswegen hat mir das Format sehr gut gefallen. Die Ereignisse und auch die Charaktere sind für mich gut herausgearbeitet, lediglich die Reaktionen (bzw. Nicht-Reaktionen) der Schule auf die Ereignisse fand ich irgendwie etwas befremdlich (auch wenn Izzy im Buch volljährig war, fände ich es merkwürdig wenn eine Schule bei derartigen Ereignissen überhaupt keine Maßnahmen ergreift um seine Schüler zu beschützen und z.B. Mobbing einzudämmen). Gut gefallen hat mir, dass Izzy in dem Buch sehr vielschichtig geschildert wird, sie ist nicht nur gut, sondern handelt teilweise auch sehr gedankenlos (damit meine ich jetzt nicht mal das Versenden von Nacktbildern über das Smartphone, sondern eher Zwischenmenschliches) und ihr Charakter entwickelt sich im Laufe des Buches glaubwürdig weiter.Nicht ganz so gut gefallen hat mir, dass das Buch teilweise fast etwas mehr wie ein feministisches Manifest wirkt als wie ein Roman, der um seine Story wegen erzählt wird, was sich vor allem darin äußert, dass vor allem Izzys Freund Danny etwas zu schablonenhaft ausgearbeitet wirkt. Man hat etwas den Eindruck seine Rolle existiert primär um ein bestimmtes Verhalten zu demonstrieren. Davon einmal abgesehen fand ich das Buch aber wirklich sehr gelungen und es sticht sowohl thematisch als auch vom Stil aus der Masse der Young Adult Romane heraus.
